Im attempting to iron out in my head several things regarding the evidence markings right after examining the submit concerning the 1892 With all the “Oval P” marked receiver, and other Discussion board conversations on this topic. Immediately after 1905, Winchester began stamping barrels, then receivers, with the “WP” Winchester definitive proof.

Also, you guys have almost certainly presently seen this information but Here's scans from the 1899 Winchester Memorandum describing the marking technique on the underside of your barrels (at that time).
I consider Winchester would of kept and managed the barrel chamber reamers for all the varied 271+ calibers that they manufactured. Along with an abundance of barrel blanks laying all around. This is often from a 1916 brochure with the manufacturing unit’s goings-on.

Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference e-book over the Model 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started evidence marking them in 1908… I don't know if which is precise, but will assume that it is. The “WP” proof mark was utilized once the barrel and receiver were mated, assembled and finished. This is highly apparent over the firearms manufactured inside the late teenagers as a result of early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off when the proof was struck within the receiver frame.
If a re-barreling get arrived in in later a long time for your barrel in a discontinued production caliber, production , consider down of an current operate or fast paced schedule could not be justified for your sake of a one particular off piece build, making the order impractical , Unless of course an previous stock element was even now in inventory , for instance in mail get Office, with the included good thing about getting compensated for an out of date product in lieu of taking over Place And at last scrapping
To the best of my awareness, when you find a pre-1905 Winchester that has a “WP” proof about the barrel, although not around the receiver, any person other than Winchester swapped the Winchester hunting gear and apparel barrel.
